Sharing

Sharing tends to be done amongst friends or by families sub-letting one room. The Gulf Daily News lists rooms available on this basis.

Apartments

Apartments tend to offer the best value for money, but as would be expected, prices can still vary significantly. You can get a basic apartment for BD 100 a month or pay BD 1'700 to stay in the Sail Tower connected to the Ritz Carlton, and there is everything in between. Of course the facilities and amenities change as you go up the scale. At the top end you will have a swimming pool, squash court, gym, shaded parking and satelite television. Most newer apartments blocks are located in Juffair or Seef, while the older ones tend to be in the centre of Manaman. Many flats on offer in Exhibition Road have tiny rooms and no parking, and the whole area gets extremely crowded and rowdy in the evenings, particularly at the weekend, when tourists flock axross the Saudi causeway.

Villas

Villas are either individual or in a compound. There are many older compounds where you can get excellent value for money and a lot of character, if you are prepared to put up with seventies-style bathroom and kitchen suites. Almost every compound will have at least a swimming pool. The best have squash courts, a gym, a children's play area and even bowling alleys. Individual villas are often slightly cheaper than equivalent houses in compounds and may have a small pool at the most.

Serviced Apartments

Serviced apartments are getting more popular as their numbers grow. These are often but not always attached to hotels and offer a great alternative if you are not staying for long or want to be flexible. Rental periods can be anything from one day to one year. The rates vary according to the length of your stay. The facilities tend to be good and you should also have a regular cleaning service.

Your major choice when you decide where to live is whether to look for an apartment or a villa. Apartments are generally in the Manama area and its suburbs, while villas are situated across the country.

If you chose a villa you will also have to choose an individual villa on its own, or a villa in a compound. Most expats choose a compound villa with its added security and facilities, which often include a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and a children's play area.

Many apartments blocks also include a swimming pool and some even have roof top tennis courts. Almost all apartments blocks and compounds have some form of security and prices for both apartments and villas vary considerably according to the age and state of repair of the building, and the facilities provided.

The bars & pubs are a very important point in the nightlife. It's easy to meet new people and to discuss with them during the evening. There are bars that we like...

The Trader Vic's, Ritz Carlton Hotel

It's actually a restaurant, but there is a bar with live music every night. The cocktails are delicious and quite cheap, compared to the city center. Don't miss this place if you like latino music. There, you'll find locals, saudis and a lot of expats from all over the world. Don't forget to have a drink at the outside bar / lounge, on the artificial lake. Website...

The JJ's (Irish Pub), Al Bustan Hotel, Adliya

According to our experience, it's THE place to be if you're an expat. There are many people anytime, with an occidental atmosphere. Every night, except during the week end, ladies pay 2 BD fee and can drink as much as they can. If you would like to go there by car, notice that it's difficult to find authorized parking... Website...

The Sherlock Holmes (English Pub), Gulf Hotel, Adliya

There are less expats than in the JJ's, but it's a nice pub. Happy hours everyday from 3 to 7 PM. Live entertainment, large screen sports covering, darts and pools. Website...

Next to the Likwid, City Center Hotel

On wednesday, from 8 Pm to 1 AM, wine tasting. Generally there's a selection of 3 different white wines and 3 red wines, from the same country. The selection changes every week. There are also some appetiyers. The place is really small and friendly. A must in Bahrain!! Website...

We will update our list as soon as we discover new places...
